Rolf Mafael

Rolf Mafael (* 1955 in Bruchsal ) is a German diplomat . He has been the German Ambassador to the Council of Europe since 2018 .

Life

After graduating from high school, Mafael studied law from 1974 to 1980 at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and the Free University of Berlin . Following the second state examination in law, he was a public prosecutor in Mannheim

In 1985 Mafael joined the Foreign Service and, after completing his career examination for the higher foreign service, was employed by the German delegation at the UN Disarmament Conference in Geneva between 1985 and 1989 and, after working in the Foreign Office in Bonn, from 1993 to 1995 Embassy in Iran .

After a subsequent assignment at the European Commission between 1995 and 1998, Mafael worked from 1998 to 1999 at the Permanent Mission of the Federal Republic of Germany to NATO in Brussels . He then worked as a deputy head of department in the Political Department of the Foreign Office and then between 2002 and 2005 as an employee of the embassy in Japan . In 2005 he returned to the Foreign Office in Berlin , where he was initially head of the department for coordinating European policy and, most recently, a representative in the European department.

In July 2012 Mafael became ambassador to South Korea and there successor to Hans-Ulrich Seidt .

From July 2016 to July 2018 Mafael was Ambassador to Kazakhstan and there successor to Guido Herz . Since September 2018 he has been the permanent representative of the Federal Republic of Germany to the Council of Europe .
