Stephan Barbarino

Stephan Barbarino (* 1955 in Burghausen ) is a German musical writer and director .

Life

After graduating from the Camerloher Gymnasium in Freising , Barbarino began studying art history and Bavarian folklore at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . Later he moved to the University of Music and Dramatic Arts Graz to where directed to study.

After completing his studies, Barbarino directed productions at the Staatstheater Stuttgart , the Nationaltheater Mannheim and the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus .

Between 1991 and 1994, Barbarino was director of the Hamburger Kammerspiele .

From 1994 Barbarino worked on the realization of a musical about the Bavarian fairy tale king Ludwig II . In 1996 he founded Ludwig Musical Projekt GmbH with music publisher Felix Maria Roehl and later Ludwig Musical AG. This collaboration resulted in the Neuschwanstein Musical Theater , designed by the architect Josephine Barbarino , Barbarino's wife, in Füssen on the shores of Lake Forggensee opposite the royal palaces. There the musical Ludwig II - Longing for Paradise , composed by Franz Hummel , was premiered on April 7, 2000 . Up to its last performance on December 31, 2003, around 1.5 million people had seen the performances under the artistic direction of Barbarino. From August to October 2005 the work was shown in a Munich version at the Deutsches Theater in Munich .

He recently wrote and staged a musical theater work for the klezmer clarinetist Giora Feidman with the dramaturge and author Jan Linders and the Israeli composer Ora Bat Chaim . Nothing but music premiered in May 2005 at the Grand Théâtre de la Ville du Luxembourg, followed by a major European tour. In March 2008 Barbarino was able to realize his piece “Nothing But MusiK” at the Teatro Franco Parenti in Milan with Italian actors and the original musician cast again with Giora Feidman in the local language. In July 2008, the performance was invited to the renowned “ Festival dei due Mondi Spoleto ” theater and played three performances there in the Teatro Romanum.

Currently three new music theater projects are being created for SEINODERNICHTSEIN- agency for art and theater: Traviazzta, after Verdi (for the Verdi year), The Raft of Medusa, an African Odyssey and a Balkan UBU. He invented the OBANDELBANDL® for the 200th Oktoberfest anniversary.
