Stephan Klasen

Stephan Klasen (born June 18, 1966 in Trier ) is a German development economist and professor of economics at the Georg August University in Göttingen. He is also director of the Ibero-America Institute for Economic Research and founder of the Courant research center “Poverty, Inequality, and Growth in Developing and Transition Countries”. He is a member of the UN Committee on Development Policy and was President of the European Development Research Network and member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for the 5th Assessment Report. Klasen is ranked 43rd in the Handelsblatt ranking of the most research-oriented economists (as of 2019).

Career

Klasen was born in Trier and first attended the Humboldt-Gymnasium (then Hindenburg-Gymnasium) in Trier. From 1983 to 1985 he attended Armand Hammer United World College in New Mexico , where he completed the International Baccalaureate . He then did his community service in the care of the severely disabled.

Stephan Klasen earned his bachelor's degree in economics at Harvard College from 1987 to 1991. From 1991 to 1994 he completed his Ph.D. in economics at Harvard University with the Nobel Prize winner Amartya Sen with the topic of an economic analysis of gender inequality in household resource distribution in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries and in today's developing countries.

Stephan Klasen was also a scholarship holder of the German Study Foundation from 1983 to 1985 and from 1987 to 1991 .

After completing his dissertation, Stephan Klasen began working as an economist at the World Bank in Washington, DC in 1994 . In 1995 he moved to Johannesburg to begin his work as an advisor to the South African government and as a supervisor of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project . From 1996 to 1998 he worked as a research fellow and deputy director at the Center for History and Economics at Cambridge University . From 1998 to 2003 he worked at the University of Munich as a professor of economics. Since 2003 he has been working at the University of Göttingen as a professor of economics. From 2007 to 2008, Klasen was dean of the Faculty of Economics there.

In addition to these activities, Stephan Klasen mostly worked in an advisory role for various organizations, such as the World Bank , DFID , UNDP , IPCC , BAMZ , OECD , UNESCO , KfW and FAO .

In 2016 he received the special award from the Board of Trustees of the University of Göttingen for building up the development economy in Göttingen.

Klasen was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Jaume I in 2018 .

In 2015, he contracted amyothrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) , which means that he will be leaving the service early. In his farewell lecture, his services to building up the development economy in Göttingen were recognized.

Stephan Klasen is married and has four children.
