The United World College – USA ( UWC – USA for short ) was founded in 1982 by the industrialist and philanthropist Armand Hammer as the fifth of the thirteen United World Colleges today . 200 students from 80 to 90 countries and the most diverse social classes live, live and learn together in this boarding school. The pursuit of peace, the conscious interaction with nature and international understanding are no longer abstract terms, but become an integral part of everyday life. The two years at college are concluded with the International Baccalaureate , an internationally recognized university entrance qualification.

history

The then President of the United World Colleges, the English Crown Prince Prince Charles, persuaded Armand Hammer to support an American UWC. In 1981 Armand Hammer bought Montezuma Castle, a former mountain retreat and spa hotel where famous guests such as Ulysses S. Grant and Theodore Roosevelt stayed, and in 1982 he founded the Armand Hammer United World College of the American West. In 2000 and 2001, more than $ 12 million was spent renovating the buildings.

A $ 45 million foundation from Shelby MC Davis and his wife Gale in 1998 was the foundation of the existing scholarship program. B. All American students study at UWCs without having to pay for school fees. The original donation was the largest private donation ever made to an international educational institution.

Academic program

The students are selected by one of the more than 120 national selection committees and usually receive a scholarship. Artistic and social activities and services are offered as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, with some of the students providing the local mountain rescue service.

Graduates usually have the choice of studying at one of the renowned universities around the world. In a study by the Wall Street Journal from 2007 , the UWC-USA ranks among the top 50 schools based on their success at the TOP US universities.

Upon graduation, college graduates can apply for one of the Shelby Davis Scholarships , which provide undergraduate programs at top US universities such as Amherst College , Brown University , Carleton College , Columbia University , Cornell University , Dartmouth College , Harvard University , Johns Hopkins University , Macalester College , Massachusetts Institute of Technology , Middlebury College , Oberlin College , Smith College , Tufts University , Princeton University, and Yale University .
