Stephan Luckhaus (born May 28, 1953 in Remscheid ) is a German mathematician.

Life

After graduating from high school in Remscheid (1971), Luckhaus studied mathematics and physics at the University of Münster with a diploma in mathematics in 1975 and received his doctorate in 1978 under Willi Jäger at the University of Heidelberg (The Existence of Regular Solutions of Semilinear Elliptic Differential Equations of Higher Order). He then worked as a research assistant at the University of Bonn and from 1984 in Heidelberg. He completed his habilitation in 1988 and became professor of applied mathematics in Bonn that same year. In 1997 he became professor for mathematical optimization at the University of Leipzig . In 2002 he became an external member of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Natural Sciences .

He deals with partial differential equations , especially elliptical-parabolic systems, in which he proved an existence theorem with Hans Wilhelm Alt , rivers in porous media (e.g. groundwater, petroleum), harmonic mapping, homogenization and phase transitions. With free boundary value problems (Stefan problem) he proved an existence theorem for multicomponent diffusion and an existence theorem of the global solution for systems with Gibbs-Thomson law at interfaces. Luckhaus also looked at medical and biological applications such as models for malignant cancer cells and the spread of malaria pathogens in the body.

In 2003 he received the Max Planck Research Award . In 2002 he became a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz. On March 28, 2007 ( matriculation no. 7124 ) he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
