Baron Cornelius Stephan von Sarter (born December 20, 1833 in Bonn , † March 30, 1902 in Paris ) was a Franco-German financial expert and stock market speculator who became known as the builder of Drachenburg Palace .

Life

Cornelius Stephan von Sarter was born as the son of the Bonn innkeeper Johann Gottfried Sarter (1788–1862) and his wife Caroline (1802–1880). When the father had to give up the inn "Zum Helm" in 1834 after a dispute with a student who was in default, the family moved to live with relatives in Cologne. Stephan Sarter left the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Cologne in 1849 with the secondary school leaving certificate and then did an apprenticeship at the Cologne bank Leopold Seligmann . In 1856 he switched to the Salomon Oppenheim banking house , which soon transferred him to her branch in Paris.

Initially working as an analyst for the valuation of bonds and stock corporations , he started his own business in 1862 and got into speculative business such as B. with shares of the Suez Canal Company, to great wealth. He published his assessments of the capital market in brochures and a magazine.

With the help of a donation of 40,000 marks, Stephan von Sarter was raised to the baron status on May 22, 1881 by Duke Georg II of Saxony-Meiningen- Hildburghausen . The German ambassador in Paris at the time, Chlodwig zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst , issued him an expert opinion, probably influenced by Sarter's membership in the German Aid Association. He gave the city of Meiningen a further 25,000 marks for a poor house called Sarter-Stift. As the barons coat of arms, he chose a scale, true to his motto: weigh and weigh!

After he belonged to the upper class by being raised to the nobility, Sarter had the Drachenburg Castle built from 1882 to 1884 for a total of 1.7 million marks. For the construction of a befitting villa, Sarter did not choose his adopted home Paris, but rather the much-visited Drachenfels within sight of his native city. With the construction of Drachenburg Castle, Sarter created a very self-confident and widely visible demonstration of his reputation and wealth. Sarter built the castle to move into with a childhood sweetheart. At the time of completion, that lover had already died, which is why he never moved into the castle. Rather, he lived in Paris until his death and also took French citizenship in 1890. He only used Drachenburg Castle to receive prominent guests there.

Von Sarter died of pneumonia around Easter 1902 in his rented apartment in Paris. Cornelius Etienne Sarter says on his French funeral certificate that the German title of nobility was not officially recognized in France. He was only transferred to Germany a year later. His grave is located below the Drachenburg in the Am Palastweiher cemetery in Königswinter .
