Stéphane Courtois (born November 25, 1947 in Dreux ) is a French historian .

Life

Courtois was a militant Maoist in the early 1970s . He is Directeur de recherche (Research Director or CNRS) at the “Groupe d'Etude et d'Observation de la Démocratie” at the University of Paris X in Nanterre and, since 1982, co-founder and editor of the scientific journal Communisme .

Courtois became known in 1997 as the editor of the Black Book of Communism , which was also published in German a year later.

In 2004, the Black Book of Communism 2 appeared in Germany , which deals in detail with other countries formerly under Soviet hegemony in the Eastern Bloc .

He is a member of the scientific advisory board of the journal Totalitarismus und Demokratie .
