The Stephanuskirche in Alfdorf is a Protestant cross-hall church in the baroque style.

Building history

The Stephanuskirche was built by the Baroque architect Johann Michael Keller the Younger between 1774 and 1776 on the decision of Baron Gottfried vom Holtz . The model was the Aalen city church . However, according to the latest research, both churches can no longer be classified as early and rare examples of Württemberg cross-churches . Johann Keller's original building plan is lost; In the Ludwigsburg State Archives there are still 22 drafts from the 18th century, none of which were ever implemented.

The church was consecrated on October 13, 1776 with a four-hour service. In 1957 and again in 2015 it was renovated.

architecture

The bright yellow church tower is striking. The " onion roof " is rare for the area . The specialty, however, lies in the interior design. It is a cross-hall church with an altar , pulpit and baptismal font on the long side so that the arrangement of the seats always describes a semicircle.

Furnishing

On the north side, behind the pulpit and the altar, there is a large mural. This monument to the fallen and missing was designed and executed in 1951 by the church painter Rudolf Schäfer using the casein secco technique .

The church's marble crucifix dates from 1688.

Patronage

The church patronage is the since 1628 Family Holtz .
