Stephen or Stephan Batman (also Bateman ; * in Bruton , Somerset ; † 1584 ) was an English cleric, translator and writer.

Life

Batman was born and educated in Bruton, Somerset. He then went to Cambridge , where he had a good reputation as a scholar and preacher. It is believed that he was also the "Bateman" who received the title LL.B. in 1534. ( Bachelor of Laws ) and was a priest and sixth year student at the time.

Archbishop Matthew Parker later hired Batman as his local chaplain and commissioned him to build the library that is now housed in Corpus Christi College . Batman claimed he gathered 6,700 books for the Archbishop, which is possibly an exaggeration.

In 1573 Batman became the principal of the school in Merstham , Surrey . Batman also served as a Doctor of Divinity and pastor. In 1582 he became the local chaplain of Baron Henry Carey, Lord Hunsdon (1526–1596). Batman also resided in Leeds , Kent for a while .
