Stephen Moulton Babcock

Stephen Moulton Babcock (born October 22, 1843 in Bridgewater, Oneida County , New York, † July 2, 1931 in Madison , Wisconsin ) was an American agricultural chemist.

Babcock studied at Tufts College, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Cornell University . At the University of Göttingen he received his doctorate in organic chemistry in 1879. In 1881 he became an agricultural chemist at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva, New York.

In 1887 he became head of the department of agricultural chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Agricultural Experiment Station (UWAES).

In 1890 he developed a test to determine the fat content of milk (Babcock test).
