Margherita Hack [marɡeˈriːta ak] (born June 12, 1922 in Florence , † June 29, 2013 in Trieste ) was an Italian astrophysicist and science journalist .

Life

After studying in Florence, Margherita Hack was full professor of astrophysics at the University of Trieste from 1964 to 1997 , where she retired in 1998.

In his private life, Hack was heavily involved in social and political issues and ran for the Communist Party of Italy several times .

In 2012, on the initiative of the Italian President , she received the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic , after she had been awarded the Gold Medal of Merit for Science and Culture (Medaglia d'oro ai benemeriti della scienza e cultura) in 1998. The asteroid (8558) Hack was named in her honor. The Premio Margherita Hack, named after her, has been awarded by the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica since 2015 and, since 2016, the Premio Margherita Hack Personaggio Laico dell'anno by the Association Laici Trentini per i Diritti Civili .

Hack died in June 2013 at the age of 91 in a Trieste hospital.
