Lorado Zadoc Taft (born April 29, 1860 in Elmwood , † October 30, 1936 in Chicago ) was a well -known American sculptor and writer of the early 20th century.

Life

Lorado Zadoc Taft was the eldest son of four children born to Carlos Taft and his wife Mary Lucy Foster. His father was a professor of geology and zoology and taught at various high schools . His sister, Zulime Taft, was a sculptor. He himself graduated from the University of Illinois in 1880 with honors ( Bachelor ) as Professor of Geology. In his youth he was fascinated by a Belgian sculptor in Champaign , Illinois , where his father was employed. At the end of the 1880s, Taft went to France and studied sculpture at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris . On his return to the United States, he was offered a teaching position at the Art Institute of Chicago , which he held from 1893 to 1900 and again from 1909 to 1929 as a lecturer in art history. In addition to his teaching activities, he wrote several books on the history of art through the ages.

Lorado Taft married Carrie Scales in 1890, who died of tuberculosis after two years of marriage . Four years later he entered into a second marriage with Ada Bartlett, which gave birth to three daughters.

Since 1906 he was an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters . In 1911 Taft was elected a member ( NA ) of the National Academy of Design in New York .

He died on October 30, 1936 in Chicago and was buried there. Taft is still considered the most important graduate of the University of Illinois and his works can still be admired in various cities across the United States.
