Stephen L. Trokel (* 1934 ) is an American eye surgeon . He developed the laser corneal correction ( photorefractive keratectomy , PRK).

life and work

He graduated from Cornell University with a degree in physics, received his master's degree in radiation biology and his doctorate in medicine from the University of Rochester , New York. He also received his doctorate in ophthalmology from Columbia University .

Excimer lasers were available from 1977 . 1983 developed Trokel with the IBM physicists Rangaswamy Srinivasan , the concept, the cornea ( cornea ) with an argon - fluoride edit excimer laser. The ultraviolet light of the excimer laser concentrates the entire energy on the corneal surface, where the cell layers are ablated one after the other without heating.

Through such a change of the refractive power of the cornea, it is possible refractive errors compensate. To correct myopia , the cornea is flattened primarily by means of a central ablation; to treat hyperopia , it is lasered steeper by means of a ring-shaped ablation in the periphery of the cornea.

Common refractive surgery procedures that use the excimer laser today are LASIK , PRK, LASEK and Epi-LASIK .

After the collaboration with Srinivasan ended, Trokel applied for a patent on the joint discovery without his knowledge. After a legal dispute, the patent was therefore declared invalid.

In 2008 Trokel was inducted into the ASCRS Ophthalmology Hall of Fame and was awarded the Rank Prize in 2010 .
