Stephen Twigg (* 25. December 1966 in Enfield , London ) is a British politician of the Labor Party .

Life

Twigg was born in Enfield , London in 1966 . He attended Grange Park Primary School and Southgate Secondary School . Twigg studied philosophy , politics and economics at Balliol College in Oxford . In 1990 he was president of the student organization National Union of Students .

From May 1997 to May 2005 he was a Member of the House of Commons for the constituency of Enfield Southgate . He won the constituency in 1997 against the conservative politician Michael Portillo and lost the 2005 election campaign to David Burrowes .

In the course of the 2010 general election, Twigg returned as a member of parliament and has since represented the constituency of Liverpool West Derby there . In July 2019, he announced that he would not run again in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Twigg is openly gay . Twigg was one of the first openly gay MPs in the House of Commons , along with David Borrow , Ben Bradshaw , Angela Eagle and Gordon Marsden .
