Angela Eagle (born February 17, 1961 in Bridlington ) is a British politician and member of the House of Commons ( Labor ).

Life

After 18 years of relationship, she entered into a registered partnership with Maria Exall in September 2008 , making her the first member of parliament in a same-sex partnership after MPs Ben Bradshaw and David Borrow . Already in September 1997, shortly after the election, Eagle had in an interview with the British weekly The Observer her coming-out .

Since 1997, her twin sister Maria Eagle has also been a member of the Labor Party in the House of Commons . The only other pair of twins in the House of Commons besides the two are Sylvia Heal and Ann Keen .

Eagle first moved to the House of Commons as a member of parliament in 1992 , and was re-elected in subsequent general elections. She represents the constituency of Wallasey around the town of Wallasey . In June 2007, she was by Gordon Brown as Secretary of the Treasury ( Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury appointed) in the government.

In 2003, Eagle supported the course of the Labor government under Tony Blair and voted for Britain to participate in the Iraq war . She repeatedly refused to investigate the US-led invasion. She supports the introduction of tuition fees, data retention and the British nuclear weapons program Trident . In 2015 she was one of the Labor MPs who did not vote against the social cuts by the Conservative government.

Since September 2015, Angela Eagle has been the Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Shadow First Minister in Jeremy Corbyn's Shadow Cabinet . In this capacity she represented Corbyn in his absence in parliament. On June 27, 2016, Eagle resigned. On July 11, 2016, Eagle announced her candidacy for the office of chairman of the Labor Party. You want to challenge incumbent chairman Jeremy Corbyn in a primary election. On the evening of July 19, 2016, she announced the withdrawal from her candidacy after it became apparent that she had fewer supporters in the Labor parliamentary group than her competitor Owen Smith .
