Stephanos Theodosius

Stephanos Mar Theodosius (born October 2, 1924 in Pathamuttom , Kottayam District , India ; † November 5, 2007 in Muscat , Oman ) was an Indian Orthodox priest of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and Metropolitan of Calcutta .

Life

After his studies and doctorate in India and the USA, Theodosius was ordained a priest by Catholicos Baselios Geevarghese II in 1947. From 1967 to 1972 he worked in pastoral care in Bahrain .

In July 1972 he was the founder of the Misson St. Thomas in northern India, which expanded its activities to Madhya Pradesh , Orissa , Bihar , West Bengal , Assam and Nagaland . In 1975 he made his profession as a ramban (monk) before Daniel Mar Philexinos and was appointed bishop of Niranam . In 1976 he was appointed Metropolitan of the Diocese of Madras and in 1979 Metropolitan of Calcutta.

He died of a heart attack on a trip to Muscat, Oman, to organize the celebrations for the 105th anniversary of the death of Parumala Mar Gregorius , the first saint of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.

Mar Theodosius was considered a committed priest, bishop, teacher and social worker. In over 60 years as a minister, he has established numerous schools and mission centers in northern India. He was the longtime Director of St. Thomas Mission and Rector of St. Thomas College in Bhilai .
