The Stephenson Bastion is a 1850 m (according to British data 1560 m ) high massif in the East Antarctic Coatsland . It consists of steep cliffs on its south side and is located in the south-central part of the Shackleton Range . It includes Mount Greenfield , the Clayton Ramparts, and the Ram Bow Bluff .
It was first mapped in 1957 by participants in the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1955-1958) under the direction of the British polar explorer Vivian Fuchs . Aerial photographs were taken in 1967 by the United States Navy . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1962 after the Australian geologist Philip Jon Stephenson (1930-2011), a participant in the first successful land crossing of Antarctica.
