Stephon Clark dies

The death of Stephon Clark occurred on March 18, 2018 in Sacramento, California . Stephan Alonzo Clark was a 22-year-old black US citizen who was suspected by police of breaking into cars. During the subsequent persecution, they said two police officers mistook his cell phone for a gun and shot him. Clark lived in Sacramento and had two children.

On March 18, 2018, an emergency call came in about a man who may have committed multiple car break-ins. Assuming that Stephon Clark was the perpetrator, police officers from the Sacramento Police Department chased him into the garden of his home. The video footage from the infrared camera of a police helicopter and the officers' body cameras show two police officers storming the property and asking Clark to show his hands. Shortly afterwards the officers shouted “Gun! Weapon! Gun! ”And opened fire from their service pistols. They fired 20 shots at the suspect. No weapon could be found on Stephon Clark's body. According to the police, they thought his smartphone was there.

After the shooting, the officers displayed the sound recordings from their bodycams.

The family of the slain Stephon Clark hired the independent coroner Bennet Omalu to do the autopsy . Omalu expressed doubts about the first official police account of the events. Omalu said six projectiles hit Clark in the back and two more in the side. Clark turned his back on them while interacting with the officers. The autopsy report states that after being shot at, he was alive for about three to ten minutes before bleeding to death. According to USA Today , officials were afraid that Clark was armed and did not take immediate medical action.

The Clarks family is represented by civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, who had already represented the families of the shot black youths Trayvon Martin , Tamir Rice and Michael Brown .

The death of Clark attracted worldwide attention, also because it had been preceded by several cases of police violence against black men. There were protests in Sacramento and other cities. a. the "Black Lives Matter" movement against racism by police authorities against non-white US citizens. According to the Washington Post , 264 people had been shot dead by US police officers by the time Clark was buried on March 30, 2018.

White House Deputy Spokesman Raj Shah said he did not have detailed information on the case and was not commented on.

In the days around Stephon Clark's funeral, there were demonstrations against police violence in Sacramento and other cities in the United States. In Sacramento, basketball player Matt Barnes of the Sacramento Kings took a leading role in the protests.
