features

Annular worms of the genus Sternaspis have, like other Sternaspidae, a short, stocky body with only a few segments and a flat belly side, which usually narrows somewhat in the middle. The species of the genus Sternaspis are distinguished among these annelids as described by Kelly Sendall and Sergio I. Salazar-Vallejo from 2013 by seven abdominal segments, sickle-shaped hooks on the retractable front end (introvert) and a stiff end shield, often with radial ribs, concentric stripes or both.

species

The genus Sternaspis comprises the following 30 species in 2018 :

Similar genera

In the family Sternaspidae there are two other genera besides star aspis : Caulleryaspis (with the two species Caulleryaspis gudmundssoni from Iceland and Caulleryaspis laevis from Indonesia) also has sickle-shaped hooks and seven abdominal segments, but a soft end shield to which sediment particles adhere firmly while it at Petersenaspis (with the two types Petersenaspis capillata of Brazil and Petersenaspis palpallatoci are spatula-shaped hooks and eight abdominal segments with a stiff end shield with barely discernible radial ribs and without concentric strips of the Philippines).
