Sternschanze

The Sternschanze is a historical fortress . It is located about 250 meters east of the Königsstuhl near Biebertal in the district of Gießen in Central Hesse . It is an upstream military base from the Seven Years War (1756–1763).

History

This conflict between the major European powers brought hardship, hardship and pain to the area, especially in 1759 and 1760. When the French were defeated by the Allied troops near Minden on August 4, 1759 , they retreated to Gießen on the other side of the Lahn and stayed there until mid-December 1759. The Allied troops advanced and began to fortify positions in the area.

The Sternschanze on the Himberg was built at the end of 1759 under the direction of Count Wilhelm zu Schaumburg-Lippe (1724–1777). Furthermore, jumps were built on the Tinsberg ( Dünsberg ), Vetzberg , Gleiberg and Wettenberg .

The Sternschanze is special because it was created almost artistically as a pentagonal star. The very good condition of the building to this day is due to the fact that fighting never took place here and that it was specially fortified as an outpost in front. The protection of the forest and the fact that no agriculture took place here did its part.

In a text from the Nassau Annals from 1888 (NassA 20, 1888, p. 377), Karl August von Cohausen and Freiherr von Wangenheim wrote about the "Monument to Count Wilhelm zu Lippe-Schaumburg". In this document, the meaning of the "Sternschanze" is correctly recognized and described, and with regard to its historical significance, it is already referred to as a monument.
