rock basalt

The Königstuhl in Lahnau forms a 348.4 m high elevation 7 km northeast of Gießen . Coming from Waldgirmes , you can reach the rock formation via the L3286 road in the direction of Rodheim-Bieber. The forester's house Haina is located on the edge of the forest, directly at the intersection of the road and the Lahnau municipal boundary, opposite you will find “Marchs Hühnerhof”. From there, a 2 km long path leads in a south-easterly direction up to the Königstuhl.

In the vicinity of the Königstuhl there is a Sternschanze from the Seven Years' War and various barrows, some of which fell victim to the robbery. In addition, the Frauenstein should be mentioned as a historical event.

The Morgenstern pit, which belonged to Buderus , was located below the Königstuhl . It was in operation for almost 100 years and closed in 1923.

Emergence

The Königstuhl rises up as the summit of the Himberg. The striking rock formation consists of basalt rock. It is cut into rough cuboids by numerous fissures, which give the summit its distinctive appearance.

The formation is due to the expansion movements in the course of the collapsing rift system in the Tertiary (approx. 60–50 million years ago). Magma could rise and solidify from the deep cracks of the transverse faults. The harder basalt was cut out by erosion of the surrounding rock.

In addition to the natural factors, the geotope is largely eroded by anthropogenic (human) influences. Up until the 19th century, the basalt was mined in a small quarry for building purposes by the communities of Atzbach and Waldgirmes.
