The Sterntalerhof is a hospice for seriously, chronically and terminally ill children from all over Austria with headquarters in Loipersdorf-Kitzladen in southern Burgenland . An interdisciplinary team with employees from nursing, medicine, education, psychology, pastoral care and social work takes care of the psychosocial stabilization of the entire family of a sick or deceased child. Every year over 100 children and their families are admitted and cared for as an inpatient and later cared for at home by network partners of the Sterntalerhof.

The Sterntalerhof was founded in 1998 as a social project by the deacon Peter Kai and the psychotherapist Regina Heimhilcher. Since the Sterntalerhof does not receive any support from the public sector, the facility is financed purely through donations. The Sterntalerhof is the bearer of the Austrian seal of approval for donations and is certified for the economy of the common good.

The civil society made up of donors, supporting companies and benefit partners such as the DM Thomas Foundation and the Vienna Charity Run, the Purbacher Craft Round and the Lasseer Charity Run are of existential importance for the work at the Sterntalerhof.

The vision of the founders was and is to support and support every family who “get into an exceptional psychosocial situation due to a life-threatening or life-limiting illness of their child. The organization understands hospice in the original sense, namely as a place of relaxation where confidence can re-germinate ”.

history

Founder Peter Kai had the idea of this facility during his activities as a therapist and pastor at St. Anna Children's Hospital and Vienna General Hospital . At that time he realized that many families felt overwhelmed after the child's hospitalization because the therapeutic help and support for them was over from one day to the next. Together with Regina Heimhilcher (psychotherapist and instructor for vaulting ), he wanted to open up a hitherto non-existent possibility of accompaniment and care to stressed families. The entire family of a seriously ill child gets into an exceptional physical and psychological situation that is looking for a place to rest, for holistic support, undivided attention and needs someone who takes time for them and gives them “shelter”.

Harald Jankovits got to know the founders in 2003 and volunteered to establish the social project as a sustainable organization. In 2008 Kai received the “Golden Lion” from the Lions Club in Vienna for the Sterntalerhof. In 2010 the spatial infrastructure was expanded. Children and families can be looked after on an in-patient basis. In 2012 Kai was Austrian of the Year in the “Humanitarian Engagement” category. In 2013, the Sterntalerhof expanded its mobile support for families through a partner network consisting of therapists, social workers and volunteers. In 2014, the Burgenland Olympic snowboard champion Julia Dujmovits took part in the Vienna Charity Run as the Sterntalerhof's ambassador. 2018 the Sterntalerhof celebrated its 20th anniversary. In these two decades of development work, the Sterntalerhof has developed a technical and business model project consisting of inpatient care, mobile care and outpatient support.

activities

As part of palliative care, the Sterntalerhof provides holistic life support as well as death and grief support , and enables inpatient, mobile and outpatient care for children and affected families. The inpatient care includes the offers of curative education and sensory integration, psychology and psychotherapy, animal-assisted therapy, social work and occupational therapy, music, art and dance therapy, pastoral care and grief counseling, if necessary within the framework of palliative medical care. This offer is supplemented by the use of volunteer children's hospice attendants and, if required, physiotherapy, massage, home nursing, etc. The mobile care at home sees itself as a partner network with social workers as well as regional coordinators, outpatient therapists, social services and volunteer family companions. “Sibling weeks” are an offer for healthy siblings of sick or deceased children.

In general, everyday life at the Sterntalerhof is characterized by rituals, such as the morning circle, ringing the noon and evening bells, lunch and caring for the animals. In addition to 30 full-time employees, there are 50 part-time or voluntary employees. Another 100 people are repeatedly involved in activities on a project basis.
