The Sterngelände is a listed district of Magdeburg in Saxony-Anhalt .

The area is also known as the star district and forms the statistical district 016 of the state capital Magdeburg. It is one of six statistical districts of Magdeburg's old town . 629 people (as of December 31, 1999) live in the Sternviertel on an area of ​​34.34 hectares .

The district is located in the south of Magdeburg's old town. The listed part includes the area Feuerbachstraße 1, 2, Geißlerstraße 1–4, Harnackstraße 1–12, Planckstraße 1–10, Schellingstraße 2–4, Sternstraße 19–25, Seumestraße 1–4, Steubenallee 1–3 and the Steubenpark . In the center of the district there is a five-armed intersection formed by Harnackstrasse, which runs from north to south, and Planckstrasse, which intersects, and Seumestrasse, which joins from the southwest.

Architecture and history

The quarter emerged after the city of Magdeburg acquired the site in 1903. Previously, the Magdeburg Fortress was located here, in particular Fort Berge , which was also known as the Sternschanze due to its appearance and thus gave the area its name. The Sterngelände adjoins urban expansion areas to the south that were developed and built on in the 1870s to 1890s. In relation to this older development, the Sterngelände was built lower, more loosely and with a higher proportion of greenery. At the same time, the construction of narrow rear buildings was largely dispensed with. The change in the structural shape is seen as a testimony to the urban development model that was changed at the time. The development took place from around 1903 and was largely completed by the beginning of the First World War . Stylistically, the buildings show designs in Art Nouveau , neoclassicism and reform architecture . In addition to apartment houses, villas were also built. Front gardens and avenues shape the streetscape.

The quarter is still closed today. In the north the building of the Hegel-Gymnasium Magdeburg dominates . Other large representative buildings in the northern part are the Leibniz School and the former State Archives . While there is a closed, four-storey perimeter block development in the northern part of the Sterngelände, villas and semi-detached houses reminiscent of villas dominate the southern part.
