history

The observatory was built in 1969 as a school observatory for the Schubart grammar school. It was only opened to visitors in 2001 and the Aalen Astronomical Working Group was established.

Since then, public star tours have been held every Friday when the weather is clear , as well as sun observation on Sunday at noon . There are also regular astronomical lectures.

Instruments

In the dome (4.5 m diameter) is a Zeiss - refractor with 130 mm opening , and 1950 mm focal length of 1941, which is mainly used for the guides. The refractor was restored in 2003 by Carl Zeiss Oberkochen. The device is mechanically tracked, the tracking speed being controlled by a friction regulator (also built in 1941).

On a smaller refractor (" Telementor " from Zeiss Jena with 63 mm aperture and 840 mm focal length) there is an H-alpha filter for observing protuberances on the solar surface .

For mobile use, the observatory has one with GPS equipped Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope , which via satellite - navigation system with 280 mm (11 ") opening. The observatory also has 20 × 80 binoculars with a tripod and a digital single-lens reflex camera .

Astronomical Working Group Aalen e. V.

The working group was founded in 2001 by amateur astronomers and school representatives. The club is in the register of associations of the district court entered Aalen. In 2005 the observatory had over 2000 visitors.
