The star wave tent of the Cologne Tanzbrunnen is a radial wave tent in membrane construction for the dance floor of the Tanzbrunnen, which stands as a round island above an artificially created water surface by the German architect , architecture theorist and university professor Professor Frei Otto for the Cologne Federal Garden Show in 1957 . The dance floor was built in 1950 by the architect Josef Op Gen Oorth . The roof structure and other buildings of the dance fountain are under monument protection. In the following years Otto further developed the membrane construction method, which reached a climax in the roofing of the main sports facility area at the Olympic site in Munich , which was realized with Günter Behnisch and his architectural office .

The tent construction is supported by six narrow 10 m long lightweight masts. The approx. 1000 m² large area of the roof originally consisted of cotton canvas . It consists of twelve identical, interconnected segments that are arranged in a star shape around a ring with a 28 m² central opening. The outer edges therefore describe a wave movement. The roof was originally only planned for the year of the Federal Horticultural Show . Since it was very popular, it was dismantled over several years in winter and put back up again in summer. After the tent had been completely dismantled for a few years, the tent roof was erected again in 2001. The entire roof structure was extensively restored. The cotton of the star wave tent has been replaced by coated polyester polyplan and now has 500 m² of protective surface.
