Stevan Josifović

Stevan Josifović (born March 3, 1906 in Novi Sad , † 1988 ) was a Yugoslav classical philologist and ancient historian .

After studying at the University of Belgrade , Josifović taught Classical Philology at the University of Novi Sad . In 1954 he was appointed university lecturer, in 1960 associate professor.

As a philologist, Josifović dealt mainly with the Greek literature of the Hellenistic period ( Lycophron from Chalkis ) and the ancient fables ( Aesop ). In addition, he dealt with the reception of ancient (Greek and Latin) literature in the South Slavic national literature, especially in Croatian , his mother tongue.

As an ancient historian, Josifović did research on the cultural history of the Balkan Peninsula , especially the history of the Illyrians and Dacians .
