The Stevardiinae are a subfamily of the true tetras (Characidae). The fish live from southern Mexico to Argentina .
The Stevardiinae replace the subfamily Glandulocaudinae in the system of the real tetras , since they, established in 1909 by Carl H. Eigenmann , have priority over this subfamily, also described by Eigenmann in 1914, and a further composition.
The best-known species of the subfamily is the Blue Perusalmler ( Knodus borki ) known from aquaristics .
features
Tetras of the subfamily Stevardiinae have two rows of teeth on the premaxillary . The second row usually has only four teeth (five in Nantis indefessus ). The number of branched fin rays in the dorsal fin is eight or less (but nine in Aulixidens eugeniae ( polymorphism of the species)), that of the fin bearers (pterygiophores) in the dorsal fin is nine.
As diagnostic features ( synapomorphies ) of the subfamily are u. a. a short frontal fontanelle that reaches no more than 2/3 the length of the parietal fontanelle and four teeth on the rear row of teeth of the premaxillary .
