Stephen "Steve" Epting is an American comic book artist.

Life and work

Epting studied graphic design at the University of South Carolina before starting his career as a full-time comic artist as a contract draftsman for the independent publisher First Comics .

For First Comics, Epting created backup stories for the Nexus series and worked as a guest artist for the Dreadstar and Whisper series and as a regular artist for the Nexus spin-off series Judas Macabee: Hammer of God and Hammer and Hammer of God: Sword of Justice .

After First Comics went bankrupt in 1991, Epting, whose smooth and clean line-striving drawing style is influenced by Joe Kubert , Alex Raymond and José Luis García-López , among others , moved to Marvel Comics . There he initially drew as a guest for the series The Avengers (# 335-339) before he began to oversee this series as a regular artist (# 343-375). His partners on this project were author Bob Harras and Tuscher Tom Palmer .

In 1994 Epting took on various engagements for various series from Marvel's X-Men label, such as drawings for the X-Factor series as well as various annuals, specials and mini-series such as X-Men'97 , Bishop: XSE and the crossover team X / Team 7 . At the same time, he was working with author Roger Stern on a series of the same name about the adventures of World War I heroes The Invaders , which was published in Marvel's anthology series Marvel Universe .

At the end of the 1990s Epting worked increasingly for Marvel's competitor DC-Comics : There he worked with author Dan Jurgens on the series Aquaman (# 63-75). After a short run on Marvel's Avengers (2000), Epting moved to CrossGen , where he worked as an illustrator on the El Cazador series , which is about the adventures of a spirited pirate and was written by Chuck Dixon .

In 2004 Epting got the job of regular draftsman for Marvel's traditional series Captain America , which was restarted with a new # 1 at the time. Epting's partner in this project was author Ed Brubaker , with whom he still oversees the series to this day.
