Steven Mack (2012)

Steven Mack (born March 9, 1986 in Volketswil ) is a former Swiss extreme athlete . At the age of 20, he survived a fall from a height of 150 meters from the Valais Ganter Bridge in an unfortunate pendulum jump . After his accident, he became known as a blind climber and his life story was discussed in the media and in a non-fiction book.

Life

Steven Mack grew up with his brother Brian and his mother Germaine in Volketswil, where he also attended school. In Zurich he learned the profession of structural draftsman . In his spare time he practiced climbing and extreme sports. On May 28, 2006, the two ropes tore while jumping from the 150 meter high Ganter Bridge. Steven Mack fell, his fall was slowed down by a tree and he hit the rocky forest floor over a hut. He was badly injured, but survived. The doctors diagnosed a severe traumatic brain injury and counted over 40 broken bones, most of them in the head. After he woke up from a coma, she was also diagnosed with blindness . The cause of the accident is suspected to be a rope that may have been entangled in components of the bridge by the wind, which also caused the redundancy rope to break due to melt damage.

In 2008 Swiss television produced a documentary about Steven Mack. In August 2011, his life story appeared in book form under the title The Duds - The Daring Life of Steven Mack and reached first place on the national non-fiction bestseller list. Steven Mack lives in Adelboden with his wife and two children.
