Steven Lee Taaffe (born September 10, 1979 in Stoke-on-Trent ) is a retired English football player . The offensive player belonged to Stoke City between 1996 and 2001 and played eight league games during this time.

Career

Taaffe was a trainee at Stoke City before getting a professional contract in 1996. The only 165 cm tall winger made his competitive debut for the professional team in the second-rate First Division in March 1998 under Chris Kamara by substituting for the Tranmere Rovers after he had scored over 30 goals in games in the youth and reserve team. Taaffe came to the end of the season to three appearances as a substitute when Stoke relegated to the second division as penultimate . In the following season under coach Brian Little Taaffe remained largely limited to appearances in the reserve team, on the last day of the season he was against FC Walsall for the first time on the starting line-up for the professionals.

After a number of good performance in preparation for the 1999/2000 season Taaffe was in the first three games of the season under the new coach Gary Megson in the starting line-up, but could not maintain his place and was no longer considered in the rest of the season. In October 2000 he was awarded for a month at Northwich Victoria in the Football Conference , but came there only for one use. Some time later he played for a week at third division competitor Cambridge United , but the loan did not materialize. In May 2001 he left Stoke after eight league and one league cup appearance after he had not received a new contract offer.

In August 2001 he auditioned for FC Altrincham in preparation for the season. A little later he received a one-month contract with the Northern Irish first division club Newry Town , but showed a disappointing performance on his debut and was substituted at half time. His football career was then continued in the lower-class non-league football , initially with Stone Dominoes in the North West Counties Football League and FC Rocester in the Southern League , from March 2002 he played at Leek Town in the Northern Premier League (35 competitive games / 7 goals). From March 2003 to spring 2004 he played for Alsager Town again in the North West Counties League before he was briefly active again for Leek Town (6/0).
