Steven Vandeput (born March 30, 1967 in Hasselt ) is a Belgian entrepreneur and politician of the Nieuw-Vlaamse Alliantie (N-VA). He was Minister of Defense in the Michel federal government from 2014 to 2018 . Since 2010 he has been represented for the N-VA in the federal Chamber of Deputies . At the local level, Vandeput will take up the post of Mayor of Hasselt from 2019.

Life

Steven Vandeput studied business and finance at the Economische Hogeschool Limburg (today incorporated into the University of Hasselt ). Then he joined the family business and became an independent entrepreneur in the construction sector. As a young entrepreneur he was President of JCI- Flanders and JCI-Belgium and Vice-President of Junior Chamber International (worldwide).

Within the N-VA, Steven Vandeput was chairman of the Limburg regional association until 2010 . He started active politics in 2010 when he was elected to the federal Chamber of Deputies. There he stood out in particular as an expert on financial and budgetary issues and followed up on issues relating to the NMBS / SNCB .

In the so-called "Sweden Coalition", the federal government under Prime Minister Charles Michel ( MR ), Steven Vandeput finally received the post of Defense Minister in October 2014. The public service is also part of his portfolio.

At the local level, he has been a member of the Hasselt municipal council since 2012. In the local elections on October 14, 2018, Vandeput led the N-VA to a victory as the top candidate. As a result, he decided to accept the office of mayor and hand over the post of defense minister to Sander Loones (N-VA).
