Stewart Memorial Fountain

The Stewart Memorial Fountain is a fountain in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1970 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

Robert Stewart , the former Lord Provost of Glasgow, died in 1866. In recognition of his service to the city, it was decided to dedicate a memorial to him. Stewart was also a major player in setting up the advanced and sophisticated utility system that had supplied the city with water since 1860. A memorial was also planned for this achievement. Finally, the decision was made to combine the projects of both monuments in one well. In the summer of 1870, 75 architects submitted designs for the well construction. The decision was made in favor of James Sellars' design , which was implemented in 1872.

description

The Stewart Memorial Fountain stands on the southern edge of Kelvingrove Park . The neo-Gothic sandstone fountain with marble and majolica details is richly ornamented. The sculptor John Mossman is responsible for the sculptural design . The bronze sculptures were cast at H. Pringle & Co. The fountain is divided into three tapering levels. The lowest level of gray granite is designed with aedicules with marble columns and richly ornamented tympana . In between, semicircular bronze panels with curved crowns are embedded. Two of the panels show reliefs by Stewart, one shows Loch Katrine (an important reservoir of Glasgow's water supply) and one shows a depiction of the Lady of the Lake (based on a poem by Walter Scott on Loch Katrine ).

On the base there is a buttress with lion sculptures on top . In between there is a band of ceramic panels with the twelve signs of the zodiac. The buttress tapers to a pillar on which a clothed woman sculpture rests.
