Stewart Wallace

Stewart Wallace (born November 21, 1960 in Philadelphia ) is an American composer .

Life

Stewart Wallace was born in Philadelphia and raised in Texas . As a teenager he played in a rock 'n' roll band and sang as a cantor in the synagogue . He wrote his first opera as a thesis at the University of Texas at Austin , although he studied literature and philosophy rather than music. At the age of 28, his first major work, Where's Dick? premiered at the Houston Grand Opera - at the same time he began working with the librettist Michael Korie . In the meantime, Wallace wrote numerous compositions in many different genres, which are performed worldwide.

Services

With his fifth full-length opera Harvey Milk about the American civil rights activist of the gay and lesbian movement (also written on a libretto by Michael Korie) Wallace attracted international attention. The work was commissioned by the Houston Grand Opera, the New York City Opera and the San Francisco Opera and premiered in Houston in January 1995 (director: Christopher Alden ). This production was then shown in New York and San Francisco before it was staged again in February 1996 at the Dortmund Theater . The opera was also recorded with the ensemble of the San Francisco Opera under the direction of Donald Runnicles .
