The Steyr 2000 is a car of the middle class , which the Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG brought out the 1,953th The body and interior corresponded to the Fiat models 1400 and 1900 , the engines were Steyr's own developments, which were also used in Steyr trucks.

After the Second World War , Steyr wanted to manufacture cars again and therefore had Karl Jenschke design two middle and upper class vehicles that were to be equipped with truck petrol engines. Their shapes corresponded to the Steyr 50/55 from pre-war production. The Steyr 70 was to be a luxury sedan with a V8 engine, the Steyr 60 a mid-range sedan with a 2-liter four-cylinder in-line engine. The corresponding station wagon version was called the Steyr 160 . However, none of these vehicles were developed for series production; All that remained was the engine planned for the Steyr 60, which was tested from 1951 in one of the Fiat 1400s built under license . The car went into series production two years later in this combination. Steyr's specialty has always been the production of high-performance cars that have no problems negotiating Alpine passes. Therefore, instead of the standard 44 HP engine from Fiat, it was equipped with the 65 HP engine made in-house.

The short-stroke 4-cylinder in-line engine with overhead valves had an aluminum housing with wet liners and a crankshaft with five bearings, was installed at the front and powered the rear wheels via the standard 4-speed gearbox from Fiat.

With the introduction of the Fiat 1400 A and the Fiat 1900 , the Steyr 2000 A with the modified body was also created in 1954 . Although the engine of the Fiat 1900 was a bit more powerful, a car with the Austrian engine, now boosted to 70 hp , was still offered. As with the corresponding Fiat, there was also a luxury version and a "Grand Vue" coupé in addition to the standard version. The two new models had slightly wider bumpers and the additional hydraulic clutch of the Fiat 1900.

In 1957, the Fiat 1400 B and Fiat 1900 B models with a slightly modified body were offered in Italy. Accordingly, the Steyr 2000 B model was created at Steyr , again in 3 equipment and body variants. The revised engine now developed 86 hp.

The Steyr 2300 Sport was also offered as a particularly sporty vehicle from 1957 . The car, only available in the luxury and Grand Vue (Coupé) versions, developed 95 hp and reached 160 km / h.

In 1959, the standard six-cylinder Fiat 1800 from Italy replaced all these models. This ended the production of Steyr cars.
