The Steyr Motors GmbH operation is in the production of diesel engines specialized Austrian company with headquarters in Steyr .

history

Steyr Motors emerged from the separation from Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG in 1990 as Steyr Motorentechnik GmbH, at that time still owned by the Magna Group . Steyr Motors has existed as an independent company since 2001 as a result of a management buyout .

The range basically includes the family of the M1 monoblock engine, the basis of which was still developed by the engine division of Steyr-Daimler-Puch. The Steyr M1 engine is mainly produced with four or six cylinders and is used in motor boats and military vehicles.

Steyr Motors was the first company to introduce hybrid technology for diesel engines in the marine sector and to mass-produce it. In 2008 Steyr Motors was able to present its first hybrid engine: the Steyr Hybrid Drive System (HDS), developed in cooperation with the Dutch company Mastervolt. The Steyr Motors / Mastervolt cooperation is a leader in the field of diesel-electric hybrid drive systems for sport and leisure boats.

AM General has been building Steyr M16 monoblock engines under license in the USA since 2009 ; the Helwan Diesel Engine Company is a licensee for Steyr 4 and 6 cylinder monoblock engines in Egypt.

Since 2011 there has been a partnership with the Lower Austrian company Austro Engine , which pursues the goal of jointly designing aircraft drives for fan guns.

On September 27, 2012, the company announced that 100% of the Chinese investment group Phoenix Tree HSC Investment had been acquired.

On November 29, 2018, the company applied for restructuring proceedings without self-administration. The reason given is liquidity problems.

After the reorganization process failed, the company was sold. The new owner is the French arms company Thales , which wants to keep the jobs in Steyr. According to the commercial register, Dieter J. Angerer has been the managing director of Steyr Motors Betriebs GmbH since January 1st, 2020.

Products

The M1 engines are monoblock turbodiesel engines with high pressure injection nozzles . The 2-phase pump-nozzle injection system generates injection pressures of up to 2200 bar. The Steyr M1 monoblock family consists of many different design solutions in order to enable an optimized adjustment to the respective environmental conditions. The motors are robust and have an exceptionally good cooling capacity. Due to their monoblock construction, they are compact and relatively light (less than 1.2 kg per PS rated power). They can be operated with diesel (F54, EN 590ff), kerosene (JP8 / F34) or marine diesel oil .

Marine applications in sport and leisure boats of the M1 family account for 60 to 70% of total sales. For example, Steyr engines are used in the boats of the Dutch company Linssen Yachts. Steyr diesel engines can also be found in motor lifeboats such as the Dutch FRSQ 700 (M16, 230 HP) and the Boomeranger rigid inflatable boats such as the RIB C-680, which are used by the Finnish Coast Guard. The same applies to the dinghies of the Rainbow Warrior from Greenpeace, which are operated by a hybrid engine.

Various design solutions for the M1 engine can be found in buses, trucks, but above all in a large number of armored vehicles. These include AM Generals HMMWV (M16, 135 kW), Panhards VBL (M14, 95 kW), Hägglunds Bandvagn 206 S (M16, 145 kW), UROVESAs URO VAMTAC (M16, 135 kW or M14, 85 kW), Hawkei (M16, 200 kW) and Force Protections Ocelot (M16, 160 kW)

Steyr M14

The M14 is an inline four-cylinder with a displacement of 2.1 L.

Steyr M16

The M16 is a six-cylinder in-line engine with 3.2 L displacement.

Steyr HDS

Diesel-electric parallel hybrid. The system enables a quiet and energy-saving, purely electric drive of the boat in the harbor area and provides the power of both drives simultaneously by means of a boost mode.

Steyr Motors M12 / MO32

Newly developed two-cylinder engine with 1067 cm³ displacement, which is intended for generator drives, range extenders and smaller sailing boats.
