The Rainbow Warrior (III) ( English " Rainbow Warrior ") is a high-tech motor sailing ship of the environmental protection organization Greenpeace that was put into service on October 14, 2011. After 22 years, it replaced its predecessor, which was also called Rainbow Warrior (II, built 1957) . This was handed over to the aid organization Friendship on August 16, 2011 (which in turn was the successor to the Rainbow Warrior (I, built 1955) sunk in 1985 by agents of the French Foreign Intelligence Service ( DGSE ) ).

Furnishing

The ship is equipped with a helicopter landing pad, a conference room for 50 people, an infirmary and cranes that can lift four inflatable boats into the water, as well as cabins for 32 crew members. The equipment with sails on the two triangular frame masts made of aluminum serves to protect the environment; in unfavorable weather, low-consumption diesel engines equipped with an exhaust gas cleaning system are available, which, as is common on modern ships, also serve to heat the cabins and to provide hot water. They are operated with light diesel instead of the sulfur-containing heavy oil that was previously used in shipping . For lower speeds up to 10 knots is an electric motor is available.

In contrast to its predecessors, the ship has an almost unlimited range and can easily spend several months at sea. In addition, the most modern (communication) technology is installed on board; the entire lighting is based on energy-saving and low-maintenance LED technology . The garbage is sorted on board, drinking water is extracted from the sea and the wastewater is treated again. Only European material was used in the construction and PVC was not used, while environmentally friendly paints were used for the exterior painting.

construction

Working on the Rainbow Warrior in Gdansk (2010)

On July 2, 2009, Greenpeace International announced the construction of the Rainbow Warrior under its then chairman Gerd Leipold . She is the first ocean-going ship that Greenpeace has completely rebuilt.

On July 10, 2010 - 25 years after the bomb attack by the French Foreign Intelligence Service ( DGSE ) on the Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior in the port of Auckland , New Zealand - work on the ship's construction began with the keel-laying at the Maritim Shipyard in Gdansk , Poland . As part of the keel laying ceremony, Pete Wilcox, captain of the Rainbow Warrior I at the time of the attack, laid a wreath in memory of the drowned Portuguese Greenpeace photographer Fernando Pereira . The seven segments of the ship's hull, created in sectional construction , were turned over individually in the shipbuilding hall. Then they were first shot outdoors and then put together. The result was a 340 tonne, 57.92 meter long and 11.30 meter wide fuselage hull.

The shell was fixed on a pontoon at the Maritim shipyard in Gdansk and lowered into the water, in order to be transferred by tug to the Fassmer shipyard in Motzen , part of the municipality of Berne in the Lower Saxony district of Wesermarsch , where it is with an engine was provided and the interior and exterior paintwork received. On July 4th, 2011 the Rainbow Warrior was launched on the Lower Weser for the first time .

The sailing ship was completed and put into service in October 2011. The ship was christened on October 14th in Berne-Motzen together with the celebration of the 40th anniversary of Greenpeace. Godmother was Melina Laboucan Massimo from the Cree First Nation from Alberta, Canada. On October 19, the ship left for its maiden voyage , and on October 20, it arrived at the Port of Hamburg. On the Elbe , she was received by the Greenpeace Germany ship, the Beluga II , and the Greenpeace inflatable boat fleet. The following day there was a ceremony with handing over the flag and a guided tour for accredited journalists about the new ship; on October 22nd and 23rd the ship could be visited by the public ( Open Ship ).

On October 25, 2011, the Rainbow Warrior was to be adopted in Amsterdam. Other destinations are Copenhagen, London and America.

design

The almost completed Rainbow Warrior in Berne (2011)

The design for the Rainbow Warrior comes from Gerard Dijkstra and Partners from Amsterdam in the Netherlands . The Rainbow Warrior is the first action ship that was designed from the start as a sailing ship. The maximum speed under sail as well as with the engine should be 15 knots; 90 percent of the trips should be sailed. As with its predecessors, the trademark of the motor glider is a stylized rainbow on the ship's side.

financing

The construction costs of approx. 23.3 million euros were financed via a very complex Flash website based on the crowdfunding principle , on which one could “buy” almost every single part and, if necessary, dedicate the purchase or donation to someone. The more than 100,000 individual donors are named on a large flag in the conference room of the finished ship.

Calls

On October 26, 2011, the ship protested for the first time: against the construction of the largest coal-fired power plant in the Netherlands at the mouth of the Ems. After a test phase, the ship is to be used worldwide in early 2012. One of the priorities in the coming years will be the fight against overfishing of the seas . Initially, it was planned to use the ship in the area of jungle protection off South America and to block freighters there with illegally felled tropical timber off the Brazilian coast ; In June 2012, a deployment at the Rio + 20 climate summit was planned.

The operations are planned and coordinated on the ship; The area of operation is to be explored with the helicopter stationed on board; two ocean-going inflatables, each with a speed of up to 35 knots, are intended for a crew of up to eight people .
