The Hawkei is an armored multi-purpose vehicle for two to six people. It is produced by the French armaments manufacturer Thales Group , which has been developing it independently for the needs of the Australian Army since the mid-2010s . The amphibious Hawkei was developed for military patrol and combat missions .

The vehicle was named after the Australian death otter species Acanthophis hawkei , which is one of the most venomous species of snakes in the world.

Development history

As part of the Australian Department of Defense's LAND 121 Phase 4 program in 2010, Thales Australia's Hawkei was awarded the contract in 2015. Other companies involved are Boeing Australia , Plasan (Israel) and the PAC Group . In October 2015 it was announced that a total of 1,100 vehicles with accompanying trailers would be delivered to the Australian Army. Thales Australia started production in 2017 and is expected to last for 3.5 years. The volume of the order is around AUD 1.3 billion . Also in 2015 it was published that Thales Polska is participating with the Hawkei in the Pegaz procurement program of the Polish Ministry of Defense together with the competitors General Dynamics Eagle V , KMW / Rheinmetall AMPV and Kerametal Aligator .

Technology and armament

The Hawkei consists of three segments: the protection cell for the crew with a V-shaped profile, which is located between the two drive units with the 365/88 R20 tires from Michelin . There are two and four-door versions. The air-conditioned protective cell for the crew offers space for up to 6 people in the four-door version or up to three people in the two-door version. The armament includes a remote-controlled weapon station , which is said to be equipped with a 12.7 mm machine gun or a 40 mm machine grenade launcher and a launcher for Javelin anti-tank missiles . Alternatively, manually operated machine guns of various calibres can be installed.

engine

The Hawkei is equipped with a six-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 3.2 liters, which is purchased from the Austrian engine manufacturer Steyr Motors . The M16 (M160065) engine produces an output of 200 kW (268 hp) at 4000 min-1. The M16 is connected to the six-speed automatic transmission 6HP280 from ZF . The manufacturer specifies a maximum speed of 130 km / h.
