Stichophthalma howqua is a butterfly (day butterfly ) from the family of the noble butterfly (Nymphalidae)occurring in Asia.

The wingspan of the moths is 120 to 150 millimeters, with the females being larger than the males. The upper sides of the wings show a yellow to yellow-brown basic color in both sexes. A row of conspicuous black arrow spots extends over both pairs of wings in the submarginal region . The apex of the fore wings is black. The brownish, reddish or cream-colored undersides of the wings show several thin black transverse lines and a series of red eye-spots, which extend over both pairs of wings and are core white and bordered in black. The undersides of the wings of the females are lighter than those of the males.

Occurrence, subspecies and habitat

Stichophthalma howqua occurs in eastern China , Vietnam, and Taiwan . The assignment of the subspecies still needs clarification. Thus Stichophthalma howqua suffusa as Stichophthalma suffusa by some authors as an independent type out. Stichophthalma howqua inhabits tropical rainforests, in Vietnam at altitudes between 800 and 1100 meters.

Way of life

The moths can be found between May and September. They like to suckle on damp patches of earth or overripe fruits in order to absorb liquid and minerals. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of sweet grasses (Gramineae) or palm trees (Palmae).
