The Luftbrückendank Foundation was set up in May 1959 by Willy Brandt on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Berlin Blockade and Berlin Airlift , to express Berlin’s ties to the states that supported the Airlift.

With an appeal for donations to the Berliners, the foundation was able to start its work with start-up capital of over 1.6 million DM. The relatives of the 78 victims of the Berlin Airlift were financially supported from the interest on the foundation capital.

Today, the Luftbrückendank Foundation mainly supports projects and ideas that deal with the topic of “Airlift and Berlin Blockade”. We support youth and cultural projects of all kinds. Preference is given to projects that involve young people and young adults from the USA, Great Britain and France.

Committees of the Airlift Thanks Foundation

The Luftbrückendank foundation is run on a voluntary basis by a board of directors who are supported in their work by an advisory board and a manager. The governing mayor of Berlin appoints the board and advisory board every five or four years .

Cooperations and activities

One of the statutory core tasks of the Airlift Thanks Foundation is to ensure that the events surrounding the Berlin Airlift are not forgotten. The foundation promotes projects and activities as young as possible who take up this idea and also deal with the events of that time as part of project work.

In cooperation with the Checkpoint Charlie Foundation, the Böse Wölfe eV, the Gail S. Halvorsen School, Gangway eV / Be-Troit, Streetdance-Connection, international projects with schoolchildren, adolescents and students have been implemented.
