The Center Français de Berlin (CFB, German : French Center of Berlin ) is a German - French cultural center in Berlin . It is located in the same building as the Hôtel de France .

history

The Center Français de Berlin on Müllerstrasse with the miniature Eiffel Tower

The French military government had a new building built on a previously undeveloped site from 1960 to 1961, with the center being opened in 1961 under the name Center Culturel Français . Until 1992 it was operated as a cultural center by French armed forces who had occupied part of Berlin . The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 resulted in the withdrawal of the occupying powers, which is why the French troops also withdrew and the center was closed.

The building complex at Müllerstrasse 74 was transferred to the Federal Ministry of Finance of the Federal Republic of Germany as part of the two-plus-four contract and the unification agreement . The governments of France and Germany have come to the conclusion that the center should be reopened “in the spirit of Franco-German friendship” and “the European idea of international understanding ”. The building was rebuilt over a period of around two years and reopened in 1994 as the Center Français de Berlin. The French Embassy , the German-French Understanding Foundation , the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth , the Senate Department for School, Youth and Sport for the Senate of Berlin , the City of Paris and the Wedding District Office were involved in the new direction .
