Stig Andersson (wrestler)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stig Andersson (born February 16, 1910 in Norrköping ; † unknown) was a Swedish wrestler . He became European welterweight champion in free style in 1935 .

Career

Stig Andersson started wrestling as a teenager in his hometown. He joined the wrestling club IK Björnen Norrköping . He wrestled in both styles, but had the greater success in free style. In Norrköping he also trained a lot with what was then perhaps the best wrestler of his time in the world, Ivar Johansson . He had the job of a freight forwarder. He always competed in the welterweight division, the weight class that at that time reached up to 72 kg body weight.

In 1930, at the age of 20, Stig Andersson took 3rd place in the Swedish Championship in the Greco-Roman style. In 1932 he became the first Swedish champion in free style. In the Greco-Roman style he was Swedish runner-up in 1932 behind his club mate Ludvig Lindblom. In 1933 and 1935 he was again the Swedish free style champion. In 1936 he came 3rd in the Swedish Free Style Championship.

Stig Andersson only contested one international championship in his career, namely the European Championship in Brussels in 1935 . He defeated Emil Kunst from Czechoslovakia , Rene Vanderveeken from Belgium , Fritz Schäfer from Germany and Willy Angst from Switzerland and became European champion .

Stig Andersson must not be confused with his Swedish namesake Thure Andersson , who became vice European champion in free style in the welterweight division in 1934 and who also snatched his starting place at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin .
