Stig Traavik

Stig Ingemar Traavik (born December 19, 1967 in Haugesund , Norway ) is a Norwegian judoka and diplomat.

Career

Traavik graduated from Oxford School High School (1983-1984) and from 1988-1994 at the University of Oslo a Masters degree in Political Science and History. Traavik participated as a judoka in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona . As a half-light weight he reached the 24th place. Traavik was Norwegian champion six times and won medals at the European and World Veterans Championships.

Traavik has been working in the Norwegian Foreign Service since 1995. From 1997 to 2000 he was embassy secretary at the Norwegian embassy in Abidjan ( Ivory Coast ). In April 1999, he was, along with five other diplomats close Kolahun ( Lofa County ) in Liberia kidnapped by rebels. Traavik managed to flee across the border to Guinea in a car with the Dutch ambassador .

From 2000 to 2002, Traavik worked on the Norwegian Mission in Geneva before becoming Deputy Ambassador in Kabul . From 2003 to 2004 he worked as an advisor to the Afghan government. Traavik made for the return of Afghanistan to the Olympics and coached the first female Olympian of the country, the judoka fariba rezayee for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens . Thereafter, Traavik led operations of the Norwegian Refugee Council in Afghanistan and Pakistan until 2006. From June to October 2007 he was Afghanistan coordinator at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Oslo and from 2007 to 2011 Chief of Staff at the Development Minister . In 2011, Traavik served as the UN special envoy to the Ivory Coast.

In June 2012, Traavik became the Norwegian ambassador to Jakarta . In addition to Indonesia , he was also accredited for East Timor and ASEAN . In 2016 he was recalled prematurely to Norway for unacceptable behavior. Traavik had started a relationship with two Indonesian businesswomen and one cultural woman. The latter is said to have received money from Norway for their organization. In February 2017, Traavik became a consultant in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also received an ambassador's salary. Vegard Kaale was his successor as ambassador to Indonesia and East Timor .
