Constant Ludovicus "Stijn" Celis (born July 28, 1964 in Turnhout ) is a Belgian ballet dancer , choreographer , ballet director and set designer .

Life

Celis, son of a Belgian and a Mauritian, completed his ballet training at the Stedelijk Instituut voor Ballet in Antwerp . In 1983 he became a member of the Koninklijk Ballet van Vlaanderen. In 1986 he switched to the Zurich Ballet under the direction of Uwe Scholz . In 1987/88 he danced in the ballet of the Bern City Theater, then returned to the Zurich Ballet. Between 1990 and 1992 he was a member of Contemporary Dance Zurich. In 1992 he went to the Ballet of the Grand Théâtre in Geneva; for this company he created his first choreography in 1993. From 1996 to 1997 he danced with the Swedish Cullberg Ballet. At the age of 33, he finished his career as a dancer and studied stage design at the Hogeschool voor Dramatic Kunst in Antwerp as a post-graduate course.

He then worked as a freelance choreographer and set designer (especially for the choreographer Didy Veldman). With reference to his piece Quartet from 2001, the respected critic Horst Koegler rated Stijn Celis as the “most exciting choreographer's discovery of the season”. From 2004 to 2007 he was ballet director at the Stadttheater Bern . Until 2014 he worked as a freelance choreographer again. In the 2014/15 season he took over the management of the ballet company at the Saarland State Theater , which has been called the Saarland State Ballet since the 2017/18 season.

Artistic creation

Celis has created pieces for internationally renowned ensembles such as the Nederlands Dans Theater II, the Grands Ballets Canadiens, the Semperoper Ballet, the Royal Swedish Ballet and the dance company of the Gothenburg Opera .

His choreographies cover a wide range of styles. On the one hand they draw heavily on the vocabulary of ballet, on the other hand they also use contemporary movement techniques. His early work, in particular, was influenced by the Swedish choreographer Mats Ek through the use of grotesque elements . Celis creates both narrative ballets and abstract works; his choreographies are characterized by a close connection between music and dance.

The second version of his choreography Cinderella from 2003 was adopted by various companies: the Semperoper Ballett (Dresden), the ballet of the Saarland State Theater, the Ballet Basel and the aalto ballett essen.
