The shipyard developed the ship type in the late 1970s. The ship series was built in eleven units from 1980 to 1984. Due to the further development during the current series, the series is divided into B181-I (three units), B181-II (two units), B181-IV (two units), B181-VI (one unit) and B181-VII (three units) divided. The construction program for this type of ship was divided between different shipping companies. Five ships were ordered from a holding company of the Hamburg shipping company Harald Schuldt. The first ship in the series was the Rijeka Express, built in 1980 . Two ships each were delivered to ship funds in Hamburg, shipping companies in Monrovia and to the British Palm Line . The latter used their ships within the West Africa service of the UKWAL (UK West Africa Line) consortium.
technology
The basic type B181 is a semi container ship with aft structures arranged acherem engine room and long baking . The later variants were delivered as multi-purpose dry freighters. The ship's propulsion system consists of a type 8RND68M two-stroke diesel engine manufactured by the manufacturer H. Cegielski from Poznań and manufactured under a Sulzer license . The motors deliver 11,190 kW and act directly on a fixed propeller with a speed of up to 150 revolutions per minute.
The four holds each have an intermediate deck and together have a bulk cargo volume of 28,083 m 3 and 25,405 m 3 of ball space. The hatch openings in rooms 2 to 4 are split in the middle and enable rapid cargo handling of the ship type, even if the cargo sections of the individual loading and unloading ports are split up several times. The hatches are closed by steel hatch covers of the McGregor type, or pontoon hatch covers, whose opening and closing takes only a few minutes. The semi-container ships do not have their own loading gear, whereas the loading gear of the multi-purpose freighters consisted of six swing loading booms made by McGregor / Hallen, each with a capacity of 36 tons.
