The Stoewer R 140 is a passenger car of the lower middle class , which the automobile company Stoewer 1932 as a successor of the type V 5 brought out. Like its predecessor, the car had front-wheel drive and independent suspension on transverse leaf springs.

The vehicle had a 4-cylinder SV in-line engine with 1.4 liters of displacement at the front, which developed 30 hp and powered the front wheels via a 4-speed gearbox. The front wheels were suspended from two transverse leaf springs, the rear wheels were guided by a transverse leaf spring at the top and two at the bottom. The body was also taken over from the predecessor, but the wheelbase and engine compartment of the sedan and convertible were slightly extended to accommodate the in-line engine. The wheelbase of the roadster remained the same. 1,100 copies were produced by 1933.

In 1933 the car received a 1.5-liter engine with the same output. The two-door became a four-door sedan with doors hinged against one another and without a B-pillar . This version had been built 1210 times by 1934.

In 1934 the car received an engine of the same displacement but with 35 hp. This made it the Stoewer R 150 , of which 1150 copies were made by 1935.

In 1935 the car was completely redesigned: the new body was a little longer and housed an engine with a displacement of 1.8 liters and an output of 45 hp. Its name was Stoewer R 180 . In the same year, production ended after only 300 cars.

It was not until 1936 that the Stoewer Greif Junior replaced the R types.
