The building at Stollbergstrasse 20 is located in the old town of the Bavarian capital, Munich . The main and ancillary buildings belonged to the ensemble of monuments in Munich's old town .

Stollbergstrasse

Stollbergstrasse was named in 1968 after Georg Stollberg (1853–1926), director of the theater on Maximilianstrasse (today's Münchner Kammerspiele ) and long-time director of the theater on Gärtnerplatz . It leads from Herrnstrasse to Maximilianstrasse. The street was formerly the north-western section of the Kanalstrasse, which was separated from the eastern part still bearing the old name by the construction of the Altstadtring (section Thomas-Wimmer-Ring) and broken through at the southern end to Herrnstrasse. Like its northern continuation beyond Maximilianstrasse, Herzog-Rudolph-Strasse, its course corresponds to the ditch on the outside of the former wall fortification from the first half of the 17th century.

History and architecture of the building

The originally three-storey house on a square floor plan was built in 1856 on behalf of Julius Grubert, managing director of the Palmschen Hofbuchhandlung, based on a design by Matthias Berger and under the supervision of Friedrich Bürklein . The original facade plan, signed by Berger and checked by Bürklein, shows an economical structure in the Maximilian style , with Gothic elements on the flat central bay crowned with a pointed helmet. On the courtyard side, the building was a lower storey higher. It is noteworthy that the foundation of the building was partly built on the remains of the former ramparts in the city center. In 1890, the architect Emil Ludwig raised the existing low storey on the courtyard side. On the street side, the house was also increased by three rooms. The neo-renaissance structure of the facade probably dates from the same time, but was later simplified. In the middle of the back a floor bay was added in 1900 (kitchen extension), to the south next to it in 1905 an arbor by Heilmann & Littmann . In the historical garden there is a small tea house from the 19th century. Flying birds and leaves are shown on the original ceiling painting.

Refurbishment and current use

In 2013 the building was acquired by the private investment company of the entrepreneur Peter Löw and renovated according to the requirements of the monument protection . Building elements of historical importance have been preserved, including original door frames and battle windows , as well as stucco and wooden floors from the late 18th century. Due to the far-reaching intervention in the existing structure and construction, it was removed from the list of monuments on December 22, 2014.
