Storm Corrosion is a musical project by Mikael Åkerfeldt ( Opeth ) and Steven Wilson ( Porcupine Tree ).

The first, self-titled studio album was released on May 4, 2012 via Roadrunner Records . Wilson described it as "the final part in the odd trilogy of records completed by (Opeth's) Heritage and Steven Wilson's brand new solo album Grace for Drowning"

history

Mikael Åkerfeldt first heard from Steven Wilson in the mid-1990s. Åkerfeldt's friend Jonas Renkse played the Porcupine Tree albums The Sky Moves Sideways and Signify for him and Åkerfeldt became a big fan of this band. Years later, Wilson Åkerfeldt wrote an email after a French journalist gave him the Opeth album Still Life . The two met in London and Åkerfeldt asked Wilson to produce the next Opeth album. Already at this meeting they talked about a further musical collaboration.

Wilson produced the fifth Opeth album Blackwater Park and also the two follow-up albums Deliverance and Damnation . He also mixed the 2011 Heritage . In 2005 Åkerfeldt took on the eighth studio album Porcupine Trees, Deadwing , guest parts on vocals and guitar.

In March 2010 both decided to work on a joint project from time to time. Originally Mike Portnoy , the former drummer of Dream Theater, was supposed to take over the drum parts, later Åkerfeldt explained that Portnoy was no longer part of the project because there was no room for drums with the previous material. Wilson specified that only 15-20% of the album contained drum parts and that these would be played by Porcupine Tree drummer Gavin Harrison . The album was completed in September 2011, but a release was initially held back so that Steven Wilson could focus on the release and promotion of his second solo album Grace for Drowning and Åkerfeldt on Opeth's tenth studio album Heritage , both of which were released in September 2011. Storm Corrosion was published in Germany on May 4, 2012 . The six songs in total were recorded in Wilson's No Man's Land studio in Herfortshire, England.

Wilson on Storm Corrosion

“I think we both had the idea for this type of music that we knew our bands wouldn't play, but we both got on really well about it. Because we have this common passion: very experimental, dark albums, almost orchestral in scope. And we've wanted to make such a record for a long time. But it's a long way from metal, and it's a long way from anything Mikael has ever done, I think, including [Opeth's] Damnation album. I think a lot of people thought, "Oh, it will sound like Damnation for sure." It doesn't; it is also far from that. And it's also far from anything I've ever done ... What we didn't want to do is join forces for a Prog Metal supergroup, even if that would have been easy - and it was partly what we did was expected. And, you know, maybe we'll do that one day. But this time we were like "let's just do this album". Some people will love it, some won't, and that's OK, because in the end we didn't want to do what was expected and that's exactly what we did. "

Wilson also said that Åkerfeldt did most of the guitar work, while he himself concentrated on the keyboard parts and arranging the music. He said about the album that it contained many orchestral parts and was " mellow, strange and disturbing ". It will contain six titles, some of which are even longer than 10 minutes. According to Wilson there are no plans for a tour for the album because it is too difficult to implement - on the one hand in terms of time, due to the projects of both band members, but also because of the music itself. There are no plans to go beyond publication either.
