The University Althanstraße (UZA) is a purpose-built from 1978 to 1995 building complex in the 9th Viennese district of Alsergrund . Predominantly erected to cover the Franz-Josefs-Bahn (or the freight station) north of the Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof , the UZA houses numerous facilities of the University of Vienna and (until September 2013) also the Vienna University of Economics and Business .

location

The university center is located in the so-called Althangrund . UZA 1 is bounded to the west by Augasse and Liechtenwerder Platz . To the north and east, the Nordbergbrücke, Nordbergstrasse and Josef-Holaubek-Platz separate UZA 1 and 2 from the Federal Office Building Josef-Holaubek-Platz (known for many years as “the Vienna Transport Office”) and the Spittelau waste incineration plant (known as “the Hundertwasser - Waste incineration "). A pedestrian bridge between the UZA and the Federal Office building has been closed for decades. In the south, UZA 4 was delimited by a public footpath with staircases as an extension of Tepserngasse from the business and office buildings adjoining it to the south.

Since the UZA houses 1, 2 and 4 are crossed by the tracks of the Franz-Josefs-Bahn at ground level, the cellars and underground car parks of the buildings are one level above the ground level. The covered driveway of this level ("Innerer Ring") forms the extension of Althanstrasse by means of a ramp and ends at Josef-Holaubek-Platz or at the Nordbergbrücke. The storage rooms of the freight station are located at platform level and can also be reached from Althanstrasse.

Connection

The UZA can be reached publicly via the subway stations Friedensbrücke and Spittelau (here also connection to the rapid transit line S40 and regional trains) as well as with the tram line D and the bus lines 35A and 37A .

Resettlement

In 2007 it was decided to relocate the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration to the newly constructed building at Welthandelsplatz 1 in the second district of Vienna in September 2013 . In the same month, the faculties of mathematics and economics at the University of Vienna moved to the new building complex at Oskar-Morgenstern-Platz 1 (“OMP1”, former address Rossauer Lände 3 with the project name Uni Wien Rossau ) in the ninth district . The move to the two locations was completed by September 2013, so that teaching and research could continue as usual from the beginning of the 2013/2014 academic year.

Since the end of 2015, the long-discussed relocation of the entire southern part of UZA 1 (Biozentrum of the University of Vienna) to Sankt Marx , where the Center for Molecular Biology of the University of Vienna, facilities of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) and the research institute for Molecular Pathology (IMP) are finally decided. Construction work on the new building began in 2018, and operations are planned for the winter semester of 2021/22.

Reuse of the former WU building

The specific (place and time) subsequent use has only been partially clarified. In the meantime, the settlement from June 2014 by parts of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna has become a reality , and a use by the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and the University of Applied Arts has been discussed or will also be used . However, for cost reasons, the new building for the University of Applied Arts has meanwhile been stopped, which means that the planned temporary use of the former WU-Vienna has become obsolete. The originally planned function as an alternative quarter for the Austrian Parliament during the planned structural renovation of the parliament building from around 2017 is no longer relevant.

Surprisingly, it was announced in September 2014 that after the necessary adaptation of the rooms, 250 Syrian refugees or asylum seekers would be accommodated for a maximum of 4 months in a building of the former WU, the UZA 3 as a "transitional quarter" in order to avoid the current shortage of suitable quarters to defuse. The first 40 refugees arrived on October 6, 2014 and settled in adapted office space in the former USI sports institute; in December 2014, capacities were already exhausted due to full occupancy, and by the end of January 2015 the quarter was completely vacated again as agreed. From the beginning of 2017, after adaptations, the building will be used permanently by the Vienna Labor and Social Court. This will move from its current location at Wickenburggasse 8 to Althanstraße 39-45.

The northern part (“rotunda”) of UZA 2 will be used continuously from the winter semester 2014/15 on levels 3–5 by parts of the institutes for theater, film and media studies (TFM) as well as for journalism and communication studies at the University of Vienna . Since June 2017, the entire level 2 has also been used by the department library for theater, film and media studies. These relocation plans, however, met with protests, especially from the TFM students, as the original plan was to bring the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy together here. While all institutes apart from those for geography and regional research have resided there for a long time, this should also be located here. Employees and the program management successfully defended themselves against this and were able to obtain permission to remain in the new institute building in the first district.
