The University Library of the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) has a wide range of information resources from the areas of social and economic sciences as well as various complementary subject areas that are relevant to teaching and research at WU. It is the largest economics library in Austria and one of the largest in the German-speaking area. As part of the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU), the university library is located on the WU campus in Vienna's 2nd district, Leopoldstadt .
history
Export academy and university for world trade
The Export Academy of the Imperial and Royal Austrian Trade Museum was founded in 1898 and received its own library. Studies began on October 1st of that year. The ministry issued the following decree for the existence of the export academy and the library: “This school is intended as an integral part of the trade museum in order to be able to use the commercial collections and the library of the institute for this purpose and to offer the students the opportunity to study the Museum for a number of years to inspect the commercial information system, which deals with the sharing of information and advice on purchase and sales relationships, etc. ”. In the first year of study (1898/99) 115 works in 142 volumes were acquired. In the years 1909 and 1910 the two-volume "Catalog of the library of the export academy of the kk Austrian Trade Museum in Vienna" was published by Franz Bayer, who had been the librarian of the Trade Museum since 1893. The first volume contained 5000 volumes and 50 current journals as a title index, the second was a systematic index of the book inventory.
The head of the Exportakademie Schmid wrote in 1914 about the main focus of the library's collection: “Since the library is in its main character, in accordance with the tasks and goals of the Exportakademie, a special library, it mainly includes commercial subjects in the broadest scope, law and political economy and political sciences, geography, transport, statistics, technical sciences, commodities and languages ... The books are usually new publications, but many are also - individually or in collections - purchased antiquarian at home and abroad or by private individuals. Every now and then the library receives various publications as gifts. "
In 1916 the Export Academy moved to a newly constructed building in Vienna- Döbling , in the 19th district. In the new building, the library was temporarily housed in the basement, where it was ultimately located for the next forty years. With the conversion of the Export Academy into the University of World Trade in 1919, the library became a university library. As a result of the granting of the right to award doctorates, the library received the dissertations written at the university from 1930.
After the annexation of Austria by the National Socialist German Reich in March 1938, the library was included in German and international lending. In addition, the head of the library, Dr. Gustav Blenk and other professors are on leave within the framework of the regulation on the reorganization of the Austrian professional civil service. Siegfried Freiberg took his place. After the end of the Second World War, the Denazification Commission assessed Freiberg as positive, but Arnold Winkler, who was one of the professors on leave in 1938, was appointed head of the library in his place. Freiberg was expelled in 1946 after attempting to destroy the following note from the library diary known to the denazification commission: “A year has passed after the Ostmark returned to the Reich. A new act of glory on the part of the Fiihrer may be noted in this book with letters of the same size. March 16, 1939: The German Reich takes over the protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (and Slovakia.) “The following year he began to work in the library of the Academy of Fine Arts and in 1948 was released from his expiatory consequences.
Furthermore, National Socialist books from the library's holdings that were not directly related to the subject were to be destroyed by March 31, 1947. In addition, the creation of a systematic catalog (sorted by subject groups) for literature began in 1945. The University Organization Act (HOG 1955) regulated from 1955 that the management of the library is directly subordinate to the Federal Ministry of Education . The next year the extension of the University for World Trade opened, into which the entire library moved. There was a new reading room, a catalog room and a magazine room, a book counter, a cloakroom and a two-story book magazine. In 1966, with the entry into force of the General University Studies Act, the obligation to submit diploma theses and dissertations to the university library was established. From then on, in addition to the dissertations, the university's diploma theses were also included in the library's holdings.
University of Economy Vienna
In the new west wing of the university, which opened in 1974 along Gymnasiumstrasse, the library received 412 m² of additional space with a new book store, a second reading room, a catalog room, etc. In the following year, the University Organization Act (UOG 1975) was passed. All of the literature available at a university and all other information carriers thus formed the holdings of the university library (§84 UOG). The University of World Trade was renamed the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration in 1975. So the name of the library changed to University Library of the WU Vienna . In 1982 WU moved into the new building of the University Center Althanstrasse at Augasse 2-6, 1090 Vienna, which opened on September 15. There the university library was housed in its own 4-storey building on 7,188 m² of usable space (location: 48 ° 13 ′ 51 ″ N , 16 ° 21 ′ 29 ″ E ). Of this, 4,622 m² of usable space (open-access reading areas, textbook collection, catalog and borrowing area) with 480 reading spaces, 1,789 m² were dedicated to book magazines and 768 m² to administration.
Automation begins
In 1988 the "Library Information System" project started. In addition, the WU-Net, the local network, went into operation and Hyperbib, a HyperCard- based system for managing literature citations , was completed.
The Social Science Information Center (SOWIS) was established two years later. She was entrusted with the tasks of research documentation, documentation of gray literature and information transfer in connection with the social sciences. The university library expanded its services in 1986 with:
- Central cataloging for the holdings of the institute libraries
- Development of a central journal catalog for WU
- Research activity by SOWIS in the relevant national and international databases
- Development of the social and economic research database IDAS
- Establishment of a specialist information service in the catalog area; Library folder with instructions for use
The “WU 2000 Library Information System” project began the following year. In this context, the library worked out a strategy for the future development of librarianship at WU. After evaluating a WU-wide survey on the wishes of the users, the project team defined the two main goals. The focus at WU was on “quickly satisfying the need for literature information in the academic workplace”. In addition, the "establishment of a WU-wide, centrally managed, standardized library information system with the possibility of cross-unit literature research and the ability to connect to the outside world" was sought. At the same time, the textbook collection was set up in open access. In 1989, participation in the automated, integrated network catalog of Austrian academic libraries (BIBOS) began. The main objective was to create an Austria-wide network of academic libraries with the possibility of researching the respective holdings from any location.
The donation campaign “Education needs books” by the Rector and the Austrian Students' Union of WU in 1993 brought in ATS 1.3 million. The main library received ATS 600,000 of this and used this money to purchase additional textbooks. In the following year the project "CD-ROM in the network" was realized, with which the library had 36 databases on CD-ROMs. In 1995, this collection was supplemented by the acquisition of Business Periodicals Ondisc (BPO) with over 500 full-text English-language journals on 600 CD-ROMs and a new CD-ROM literature research room with 20 workstations was set up in SOWIS. The library's services were expanded in 1996 to include the document delivery service and the online search in the sub-catalog for dissertations after WU theses. On June 25, 1997, the legal basis of the university library changed because the Vienna University of Economics and Business "toppled" into the 1993 UOG. The university library was no longer directly subordinate to the Ministry of Education, but to the university management. In the same year, magazines were made available online at WU. ExLibris was awarded the contract to introduce the new Aleph 500 library network system, which went into operation at the end of 1998.
In a further reorganization of the three main departments of the library, the InfoCenter (since 2013: library information) was introduced. Questions relating to literature research and the search for specialist information can be asked here. Users receive information, advice and support, from problems with a literature list to information research for a thesis or research paper. In addition, ePubWU - the WU's electronic publication platform for dissertations and working papers - went into operation. In the following year, the expansion of the digital library was defined as a strategic goal. The SFX service was also started. Since then, users have been able to start a search for alternative access options if a medium should not be available. In the case of printed works, the collections of the entire Austrian library network are searched and, in the event of a search for an electronic journal or an article, it is checked whether the content is accessible via another provider.
Since 2004 (reporting year 2003) the library has participated in the BIX library index , a German benchmarking project for academic libraries.
In August 2017, the WU Vienna University Library, together with six other libraries of the Austrian Library Association, switched to the cloud-based Alma library software from ExLibris.
fire
On the night of December 13, 2005, the department library for biology, located in the 1st basement of the library building, was severely damaged by arson. The reading room of the WU library was also affected. The entire open access area with around 40,000 volumes and the public PCs had to be cleaned of soot and repaired. Some of the PCs and printers, a self-checking device, the CD-ROM server and the book security system were also damaged or destroyed. The perpetrator was later identified and in 2007 was sentenced to six years in prison. On January 9th, 2006 the library was partially reopened and on January 23rd all books were back in their place. However, it took the whole of 2006 until the consequences of the fire could be completely eliminated.
The way to the WU campus
The decision to build the new WU was made shortly before Christmas in 2005. In the course of the planned new WU building, calculations of future space requirements were made in 2007. In addition, the holdings from 1931–1985 were retro-cataloged. The library also organized two international conferences (EBSLG, Nereus) as part of its network cooperation. In 2008, the Zaha Hadid office emerged from the architectural competition for the new building as the winner for the Library & Learning Center (LLC, later LC), which will also house the library. The LC was planned as the center of the new WU campus and architectural landmark. In the 2013/2014 winter semester, the university library was opened on the new WU campus after moving from Augasse.
organization
With the move to the new building, the library was restructured. The more than 65 institute libraries and the main library were converted into a single-layer system that consists of a library center and three locations in the departments. These are operated jointly as the university library. The library administration is subordinate to the library management and is divided into the departments service management, inventory management, media management, e-resources and magazines as well as the department usage management.
Locations
The WU university library consists of four different locations, all of which are located on the WU campus. The main location is the library center, the other locations are the law libraries (D3), social sciences (D4) and business languages (D2), which can be found in the respective department buildings. The library center is located in the LC building, the library and learning center.
Library center
The library center in the LC building is spread over a total of seven levels. From 2004 onwards, the book collections are on levels 5 and 6, sorted thematically according to the RVK . Level 4 below is the communicative zone with library information, PC workstations, news lounge, magazines and a café. The reference books are located on level 3, while the textbooks are located on level 2. The user enters the library via the entrance on level 1. There are also the library reception, automatic return machine, self-collection shelves for book reservations and the cash machines. Older book holdings (before 2004), magazines from previous years and theses are freely accessible on level −2.
Rooms and equipment
Most of the library center's holdings are freely accessible to users. The media are borrowed by the users themselves from self-checkout devices and returned via the externally accessible return machine. Thirteen color book scanners up to formats A2 and A3 are available to users across the levels and locations. The 1,500 self-study spaces in the LC building are designed differently. They are spread over quiet zones, communication areas, project work rooms for students, a library café and the news lounge.
Holdings and departments of the library
The WU library holdings currently include around 745,797 printed works, 59,006 electronic books, 1,014 printed journals, 18,116 licensed electronic journals and 119 databases. A Library Press Display Terminal with 1,600 daily and weekly newspapers is also available in the news lounge.
The library focuses on business administration, economics, law (especially business law), business informatics, statistics and mathematics, economic geography and economic history, sociology and business education.
Special collections by Kurt W. Rothschild and Josef Steindl
The estate libraries of Kurt W. Rothschild and Josef Steindl are located in the library center as special collections . It is mainly about economic literature, but works from other subject areas can also be found in the collections (Rothschild: sociology, political science, history, philosophy; Steindl: mathematics, statistics, natural sciences). Some of the holdings in the special collections contain handwritten notes etc. Ä. That Rothschild and Steindl have made.
Services
The university library supports research, teaching and studies at the WU Vienna with its services. To this end, it offers a comprehensive supply of literature and information and encourages users to deal with literature and information. The library information and research advice provide users with appropriate assistance. In addition, courses are held to promote information literacy. This offer is also supported electronically with e-learning content for research and documentation via the learn @ wu learning platform. With the library search engine primo @ wu a large part of the different available materials can be searched with a single search query. If something is not available in the university library, since 2003 users have been able to use the SFX function to find out whether the desired medium can be found via primo at another Austrian library or from another licensed provider of electronic resources. If a journal article or book is not available via the university library, it is possible to order it from another (Austrian or foreign) library via interlibrary loan or document delivery.
Guided tours are organized for interested groups. A tour of the library primarily provides a general overview of the spatial structure and the areas of use of the library.
Projects and Cooperations
Research database IDAS
Under the direction of Dr. Bettina Schmeikal started up the IDAS research project database in 1986. Austrian research projects in the field of social and economic sciences were collected and documented. Through a cooperation with the IZ Sozialwissenschaften in Bonn, the data was also recorded in the FORIS database (FORIS is included in the “wiso Sozialwissenschaften” data network and is therefore widely available at universities in the German-speaking area). Since 2006 the database of WISDOM, Austrian Data Archive, has been continued under the name FODOS. The data from IDAS was transferred to FODOS. WU's research projects have been recorded by the WU's research service in FIDES (Research Information Documentation Evaluation System) since 2000.
Provenance research project
A provenance research project has been running at the library since May 2010 . In the course of this project, 50,000 books were autopsied. Research is now being carried out on 154 acquisitions classified as questionable. One work has already been restituted.
