Mickten tram station

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Straßenbahnhof Mickten is a former tram depot in Dresden district Mickten . It was created in 1897 as a depot for the Dresden tram company ("Yellow") and was also used by the meter-gauge Lößnitzbahn from 1899 . In 1931 the part that was assigned to the Lößnitzbahn was rented to a garage over various stages after it had been re- tracked. The Dresden Transport Company gave up its original purpose in the 1990s. After a long vacancy, the part that was originally built in 1897 and is a listed building has been used as a shopping center since 2009.

history

Mickten tram station, listed building, from Leipziger Strasse, 2011

The tram station was built in 1897 on a plot of land between Leipziger Strasse, Sternstrasse and Jägerstrasse (since 1946 Franz-Lehmann-Strasse). In addition to the administration building at Leipziger Strasse 133, the facility also included several vehicle hangars and workshops. The vehicles of the “Yellow” Dresden tram company were parked in the central car shed, while the second car shed on Lommatzscher Strasse served as the depot for the narrow-gauge Lößnitzbahn. This connected Mickten with the Lößnitz communities from 1899 and, in contrast to the Dresden Stadtspur, had a track width of only one meter . Passengers who came from Dresden and wanted to travel further in the direction of Radebeul - Kötzschenbroda had to change trains at the Mickten tram station. Because of the different gauges , it had an extensive regular and narrow-gauge track network and was a special feature in the operational process. For reasons of space, there were two transfer platforms in front of the parking halls , via which the tram vehicles were transported to the respective sidings.

The first extension of the tram station took place in 1914, so that 84 motor coaches and 69 sidecars could be parked in Mickten. Major reconstruction work became necessary in connection with the planned gauge changeover of the Lößnitzbahn. In 1927 the Dresdner Überland-Verkehrs-Gesellschaft mbh (DRÜVEG) took over the Lößnitzbahn and planned to extend it as an intercity tram in Dresden's city lane to Meißen . In 1928, work began in Coswig to convert to the new track width of 1450 mm. On July 20, 1929, the new Coswig tram station was opened. With the completion of the gauging of the line, the meter-gauge Lößnitzbahn was stopped on June 27, 1930 and the narrow-gauge part of the Mickten tram station was given up. After the remaining tram cars were sold or scrapped, the wooden wagon hall of the Lößnitzbahn was converted into a workshop for buses and trucks.

The remaining part remained as a depot for the Dresden tram . Problems arose in the 1970s with the use of modern Tatra T4D and B4D trams . Because of the larger center distance, the transfer platforms for these vehicles could no longer be used, so that only older types could be parked in Mickten. When they were decommissioned in 1992, the tram station was therefore closed for regular operation.

On June 2, 1992, the Dresden Tram Museum Association was founded in the Mickten tram station . V. , who parked his historic vehicles there. A little later, the collection was brought to Coswig and has been in the historical part of the Trachenberge depot since 1996 .

The Mickten tram station has been empty since then and was sold to an investor and renovated after a long period of decay. In November 2009, a shopping center with two hypermarkets and several smaller shops opened in the two large car halls that are under monument protection. The former hall of the Lößnitzbahn along Lommatzscher Straße, however, was partially demolished. In order to make the former construction volume of the hall tangible, the earlier order of the facade supports was taken up and supplemented with modern elements.
